2007 Shannon Treewalk

[adapted from an Irish magazine article]

Travelling by foot and by hand made canoes and some borrowed ones, a group of people who care about nature are volunteering to share their enthusiasm and knowledge of trees and water with those they meet en route. "It's for the kids and the future." says Tree Walker John Crossan. He continues, "All we ask is for people to be open to the Tree Walk". The group are prepared to plant native trees during the month long walk in whatever conditions the weather offers. They receive no grants and are not-for-profit. At the end of the days walk the travellers must find a place to rest. We wish them good luck and hope conditions are favourable. The Shannon Tree Walk starts 10 April 2007 from near Dowra, Co. Cavan. Journeys end is one month later at the mouth of the Shannon. Previous walks throughout Ireland have taken place in 1996, 1997, 2003, 2004 and 2005. Two of these walks focussed on reaching the source of the Shannon ; 'Shannon Pot ; Connla's Well'. This walk will continue from the source, connecting with past journeys and bring it on down the river in canoes, going from community to community and focused on dropping in on the children in the schools along the way. Last year the Tree Walk was well received in New Zealand! Which is fantastic to hear we are united round the earth. One love... The aim is to create and focus awareness on the importance of trees and water and the vital role they play in all life. All are welcome to participate. Basic training can be provided.
